David Corenswet clarified some comments from a 2019 interview about his dream of playing Superman and how he thought it would never happen.

Way back in 2019, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet said his “pie in the sky ambition” was to some day play Superman. In a new interview with ABC News, the actor said of the previous statement, “I said it was my pie in the sky ambition, which I meant to mean that there was no (expletive) way it was ever going to happen.” He went on to add, “I sort of was thinking of it as, ‘Oh, who wouldn’t love to get to play an iconic role like that? Wouldn’t it be amazing and impossible if we lived in a universe where that could even be considered?’”

DC Studios co-chair, and director of the upcoming Superman, James Gunn said of Corenswet, “David was one of the very first auditions that I got. Instantly, it was a relief because he had a playful charm about him that was not evident in Pearl. He had a sense of humor. That made me go, ‘Ooh, this might be a really good match.’”

Gunn went on to add that Corenswet has a lot of Superman in him, sharing, “Superman is a square and David is a square. He listens to American Songbook. Like Dean Martin and Cole Porter. That’s what he listens to on his iPad. That’s weird. But oh, so Superman.”

That was just the beginning of the long casting process. Even Nicholas Hoult, who was ultimately cast as Lex Luthor, was up for the part. And though it was “extensive,” Corenswet said it was one of the most “satisfying audition processes” he’s ever gone through — not because he booked the role, but because he felt he got the opportunity to show them what he had to offer.

Gunn laughed that Corenswet actually has a lot of Superman in him.

“Superman is a square and David is a square,” Gunn said. “He listens to American Songbook. Like Dean Martin and Cole Porter. That’s what he listens to on his iPad. That’s weird. But oh, so Superman.”

Superman will serve as the first live-action entry expressly made for the new DCU.  In addition to seeing Superman, the film will include the first appearances of Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, Lex Luthor, Eve Teschmacher, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, Guy Gardner, the Engineer, and Krypto the Superdog. Some rumors have indicated we will also see the first appearance of Supergirl, who is set to be played by Milly Alcock. She will then appear in her own film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer , Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher MacDonald as Ron Troupe, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard.

Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
