Marvel Studios is currently in the midst of penciling a blueprint for its next ‘Phase,’ a saga that studio head Kevin Feige has already confirmed will lean heavily on the X-Men and other mutant characters.
And as the entity looks for inventive ways to introduce new renditions of these iconic characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper, it looks as though one mercenary associated with the X-Men’s previous cinematic endeavors will be sticking around.

Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds confirmed at Fanatics Fest 2026 that another film featuring the ‘Merc with the Mouth’ is in development. He didn’t provide a potential release timeline, but he expressed optimism regarding its eventual quality.

“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies,” Reynolds said during a Fantatics Fest appearance, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics.
“There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza [co-creator of Deadpool] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer. There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”

Reynolds debuted as Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with both the film and its interpretation of the character largely being panned. He returned in 2016’s Deadpool, a more faithful R-rated adaptation that ushered the character into the mainstream.
The film received a sequel in the form of 2018’s Deadpool 2, but the character’s future was muddied after The Walt Disney Company’s 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The Mouse acquired the film rights to the X-Men and adjacent characters in the deal, rendering the cinematic fates of the pre-merger performers unclear.

Disney demonstrably wanted to be in the Deadpool business, reuniting Reynolds with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine for its first mutant-centric film. Deadpool & Wolverine released in 2024 and reignited a then-stagnant MCU, earning $1.3 billion worldwide.
The Future of Mutants in the MCU
Reynolds has previously discussed Deadpool’s return to the screen, stating earlier this year that he had started writing “some stuff.” However, he feels that the character is now better suited for a supporting role.

“He is a supporting guy,” Reynolds said in an April “Sunday Today” interview, per Variety. “He is a guy who is great in a group.”
Deadpool has been a part of an ensemble in his last two films—with Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) in Deadpool 2 and Wolverine (Jackman), Gambit (Channing Tatum), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes) and X-23 (Dafne Keen) in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Each of those films’ arcs is very Deadpool-centric, however. It appears that a potential Deadpool 4 would see the character take a back seat.
The X-Men — and mutants, in general — figure to be the focus of the MCU’s next saga now that Marvel can use the characters. New performers have not yet been revealed, though select characters from the Fox-produced X-Men films are due to return in Avengers: Doomsday.

Perhaps Marvel’s next film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will provide some insight into this topic. The newest Spidey movie is set to release on July 31.
