Will Murray, the co-creator of Squirrel Girl, passed away at the age of 73. Through his work as an author, editor, journalist, and historian, Murray’s writing contained an energy, optimism, and a larger-than-life style that came to define his signature Marvel character. To celebrate Murray’s life, we’re revisiting his Squirrel Girl stories, the legacy of his beloved creation, and the lasting impact both have had on the Marvel Universe.
In an era defined by dark characters, Will Murray and Steve Ditko created Doreen Green, A.K.A. Squirrel Girl, to be a different kind of hero. In her first appearance, Murray and Ditko gave Squirrel Girl an enthusiastic, optimistic, and joyfully silly approach to crime-fighting. Her whimsical qualities paved the road for Squirrel Girl to become a fan-favorite icon in the 2010s, when she starred in her own award-winning comic series by Ryan North and Erica Henderson.
