Upcoming Comics May 21, 2025

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! As you might have noticed, we have an op-ed up on the site this morning. What you might have also noticed is that it’s part of a series. Moving forward, we plan to have regular articles put up as part of “From the Batman News Desk”, where the different writers here will post about character histories, thoughts on the state of comics, and a whole host of other topics. You’ll even be hearing some voices you haven’t in a good while. We’ve got a solid backlog of pieces ready to go, and hope that you’ll like reading them as much as we did writing them.

Upcoming Comics

Detective Comics #1097

In the wake of Asema’s murderous rampage, a new threat to Gotham—and the world at large—has been exposed. Still reeling from personal revelations about his past, Batman must take on a group obsessed with their own future. A group that has targeted a dear friend.

  • Written By: Tom Taylor
  • Art By: Lee Garbett

Thoughts: I hope that we can reveal yet more secret childhood friends of Bruce’s. They should get together with Thomas Elliot and start a club.

Batman News Critic: Aaron

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39

The Batman and Superman of yesterday…today?! As Gorilla Grodd’s vicious temporal onslaught upon the Justice League continues, the Dark Knight and Man of Steel from the time of the World’s Finest get a horrifying glimpse into their own futures…and the tragedies to come! It’s minute-by-minute mayhem in the epic new installment of the “We Are Yesterday” crossover with Justice League Unlimited!

  • Written By: Mark Waid
  • Art By: Clayton Henry

Thoughts: The cover would almost have you believe that we’re going to put every other event into this event. That truly would be the most DC idea I could think of. Crisis on Infinite Crises.

Batman News Critic: Jackson/Akash

Nightwing #126

Has Blüdhaven’s first corrupt police officer truly returned from the dead to strike down honest cops…or is there a sinister conspiracy in the heart of Commissioner Sawyer’s department? Nightwing isn’t sure which might be worse—if he can survive long enough to find out.

  • Written By: Dan Watters
  • Art By: Francesco Francavilla

Thoughts: I actually thought the last issue of this was great, but it also had almost no Nightwing and just followed Sawyer. Maybe every comic should just become a gritty detective story. The children yearn for Gotham Central.

Batman News Critic: Aaron

Batman & Robin: Year One #7

The General is on the hunt for the man behind the mask and is on the warpath. As the Dynamic Duo continue to stretch themselves thin and tire themselves out stopping various threats around Gotham, the General’s threat closes in on them!

  • Written By: Mark Waid, Chris Samnee
  • Art By: Chris Samnee

Thoughts: It feels weird to see “The General” as a Dick Grayson villain when I associate that so much with Tim.

Batman News Critic: Chip

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #3

The Justice League is gone! Who will protect the Earth and beyond from the myriad of supervillains on the prowl? Enter Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends to pick up the slack! Watch as Sega’s iconic characters don the costumes of DC Comics’s finest and take on their greatest foes!

  • Written By: Ian Flynn
  • Art By: Adam Bryce Thomas

Thoughts: Finally, we get to the cover that was probably the whole pitch for the series.

Batman News Critic: Chip

Catwoman #76

As Catwoman’s life hangs in the balance, Selina’s mind drifts back to her final days as Evie Hall and the deadly events that led her to discard that identity and return to Gotham City.

  • Written By: Torunn Gronbekk
  • Art By: Patricio Angel, Fabiana Mascolo

Thoughts: Just how many secret identity pasts does Selina have? It seems almost every new run adds another one.

Batman News Critic: Akash

Titans #23

Nobody’s quite sure what to make of the latest addition to the Titans’ roster, but it’s got Cyborg feeling increasingly like Dr. Frankenstein. But this is no collection of rusty bolts and moldy body parts he’s brought to life. It’s the most sophisticated artificial intelligence the world has ever known, capable of controlling every computer on the planet—or destroying them!

  • Written By: John Layman
  • Art By: Pete Woods

Thoughts: This month, the Titans take on ChatGPT.

Batman News Critic: None

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat, where we take a quick look at the rest of DC’s comics coming out this week.

Graphic Novel Watch

Sometimes you need more than floppies. Sometimes you want something that can sit nicely on your shelf that proudly displays your favorite stories. That’s when you turn to graphic novels. Let’s see what bat collections are coming out this week:

Ratings

Most Excited: Nightwing #126– Last issue left a really strong impression on me, so I’m hoping it can keep that up.

Least Excited: Titans #23– I guess I do have to give credit that they’re doing a different storyline than what the Titans always fall back on.

Wild Card: Batman & Robin: Year One #7– I’m still unsure how I feel about this series, especially in how it compares to other stories that cover the same premise.

Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
