Matt Reeves has teased that the villain for The Batman: Part II hasn’t been in a movie before, leading to all sorts of speculation.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz at the recent Emmy Awards ceremony, Reeves had a lot to say about the upcoming sequel to The Batman. The director pointed out that “the first [film] is so focused on Batman. [In] a lot of the other films, which I love, once you get past the origin tale, which we didn’t quite do, but we did something that referred to his origins, then you start telling the Rogues Gallery story and that character’s sort of arch. But I never wanted to lose [Robert Pattinson] at the center of these stories, and so that is really what we set our aim on.”
Reeves went on to explain that this played into the selection of the film’s antagonist, and they landed on one that had “never really been done in a movie before.”
We assume he is referring to live-action films, because if animated films are included, then nearly every potential villain has appeared in those.
With saying that the emphasis on the Bruce Wayne aspect of the character played a factor, it’s not difficult to imagine that Hush should be a consideration. To a lesser extent, you could also make an argument for the Court of Owls due to their connection to the old money of Gotham. Considering the state of the city following the events of The Batman and The Penguin, it’s not difficult to imagine the Court might be a bit perturbed with the way things are going.
The Batman hit theaters on March 4, 2022 and went on to earn $765.95 million dollars globally. The franchise received an interim expansion with the release of The Penguin – an original series with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobb from the first film – on Max.
The untitled The Batman sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.
