When asked about the project, Momoko shared, “When I was in school, I always wanted to use screentones for my artwork, but they were too expensive for me to afford. Now, I have the opportunity and decided to challenge myself by using screentones for these new Marvel covers.”
“But an obstacle emerged,” explained Momoko. “How to color using watercolor paint on these screentones? So instead of painting on top of the screentones (risking the art warping), I tried and found that painting on the back of the canvas was very effective! It created a very clean, soft tone color palette that comes through the painting when light passes through from behind. I always enjoy these trial and error challenges and discovering the best methods of painting.”
