According to a new report, Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) is in talks to join the upcoming Clayface movie.
The latest report from Deadline also indicates that the film is targeting a budget of around $40 million. The story will reportedly focus on an actor who is disfigured by a gangster and turns to a doctor for assistance with repairing their face. In true DC style, however, that can’t possibly go smoothly.
There is no word yet on who Minghella will be playing. Should he join the film, he will be joining Tom Rhys Harries, and the rumored Naomi Ackie.
The idea of a Clayface movie was already intriguing, especially in Flanagan’s hands. He’s got a track record for turning internal torment into cinematic poetry. And while that might sound a little too elevated for a Batman villain who once turned into a mud monster to escape Arkham, the thing about Clayface is he’s always been a little tragic. He’s not in it for world domination. He’s in it because he’s falling apart—literally and otherwise.
If director James Watins pulls this off, we may finally get a villain story that doesn’t feel like Joker-lite or a deleted scene from The Batman. And with Naomi Ackie circling the cast, it’s safe to say Clayface might be ready for his close-up—no touch-ups needed.
Rumors of this project date back to 2023, but it seems things are finally coming together. Flannagan has written the first version of the script for the project. Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will be producers via their 6th & Idaho Productions company.
The untitled Clayface movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 11, 2026.
