Matt Reeves has opened up about the journey to making The Batman: Part II and how it took “longer than I would have wanted.”

Making any movie is no small feat, and it seems that Reeves was reminded of that as he worked on The Batman: Part II. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the Emmys, the director offered an update on the project, saying, “We’re getting ready. We’re basically entering prep. We’ll be making the movie in the spring.” He went on to add, “It’s been a journey that is taking longer than I would’ve wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons, but most important reason is getting it to a place where I just felt like it was the best script we could possibly write.”

Reeves also addressed the secrecy they are maintaining around the script. “So, Benito, who’s my assistant, he goes and seeks out a very, very high security pouch that has a code on it that then we have to send separately. And then [Robert Pattinson] was like, ‘I can’t open it.’ I said, ‘I know, here’s the code.’ He opened it, and then we had a FaceTime after he read. It was very exciting.”

Reeves didn’t reveal any plot points, but did share that will be similar to the detective story we saw in the first film. “Obviously because of what the first movie was and what this movie is, which is so much a detective story, the idea of trying to protect the secrets of the movie is super important because it’s a mystery. It would be an extra level of heartbreak if that part of it started getting out.”

The Batman hit theaters on March 4, 2022 and went on to earn $765.95 million dollars globally. The franchise received an interim expansion with the release of The Penguin – an original series with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobb from the first film – on Max.

The untitled The Batman sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027.
