MarvelBlog News for June 7th, 2026

We’re going to talk all things gaming and especially Wolverine this week.

Think of this as the MarvelBlog News state of play.

Well, Destiny 2 fans, we heard you loud and clear.

Personally, I wish you’d picked a different forum than Sony’s State of Play, though.

In case you missed it, Sony tried to discuss its upcoming PlayStation releases.

The livestreams didn’t go well due to the vociferous protests of Destiny fans.

Sony recently announced that Tuesday’s update will be the last one ever.

Also, there are no plans for Destiny 3 right now, which is objectively a strange business decision.

What does any of this have to do with Marvel? Well, here’s IGN explaining it.

Ostensibly, Sony wanted to highlight two games: a God of War spinoff and Wolverine.

We only care about the latter, although I have to say that the God of War looked great.

As for Wolverine, it’s Sony’s latest attempt to monetize the MCU.

The video game company previously mined Spider-Man to maximum effect.

Rather than telling yet another Spidey story, Sony’s going another way now.

Insomniac Games, which previously released the Spider-Man game, has returned.

Sony owns Insomniac, which makes this a de facto first-party release for the PlayStation.

We’d previously gotten footage from the game eight months ago in this clip:

However, that video barely whetted our whistle. State of Play proved different.

Here’s the new action video of Wolverine in its near-final state:

Before we discuss specifics, let’s get the business out of the way.

$69.99 MSRP

Marvel’s Wolverine will debut on September 15th, 2026.

So, its release date is a little over three months from now, and preorders are already live.

Based on what Sony is saying, this won’t be a Marvel’s Avengers situation.

The Spider-Man games aren’t pay-to-win, and Wolverine won’t be, either.

Your $70 will unlock the standard version of the game.

You can pay $10 more for the digital version, which includes unique skins and an early weapons unlock.

You don’t need any of it, but you’ll progress slightly faster for $10 more.

I guess you could argue that’s pay-to-win, but it’s a solo offline game.

If anything, you’re simply speeding up your initial playthrough.

Speaking of which, Insomniac showed this particular clip to make a point about the gameplay.

This game is decidedly adult in nature, especially compared to Spider-Man.

Wolverine’s weapon of choice ejects from his skin and skewers people.

There’s no way to show realistic impaling without buckets of blood squelching.

For its part, the studio claims that it’s doing the following:

“We also are creating a storyline that is equally mature, that has more depth and ambiguity and deepness to go along with that.”

I read that as, “Yes, you mega-murder people heroically as Wolverine.”

I’d quibble with the “heroically” part, but you get the drift. He’s the good guy.

If he happens to shiv thousands of bad guys along the way, it’s in the name of justice.

Insomniac adds that some people are squeamish. So, you can dial down the blood if so inclined.

If I were a member of Friends of Humanity, that’s definitely the setting I’d choose.

About Wolverine

Insomniac promises “the ultimate Wolverine fantasy, with fast, fluid, and ferocious combat.”

That sounds nice and stabby, just the way Wolverine fans would want it.

Also, the game will tell a “gripping story that taps into the core tenets of one of the most compelling comic book characters of all-time.”

I guess that means he’ll pine after Jean Grey in between brutal murders.

If he can make fun of Cyclops for being a goody-goody along the way, so much the better.

I kid…mostly. Wolverine, for all his splendor, is a pretty one-note character.

Image: Disney

That note is piercing body parts for (blood) sport. It’s a good note.

Still, Wolverine’s story arcs are typically, “This guy I hate is a jerk and also my dad.”

Image: Disney

So, I don’t know how Insomniac can raise the bar here, not that it matters.

Really, all we want to do is whip out our Adamantium claws and teach jerks a lesson.

Wolverine is gloriously simple like that. He’s short, Canadian, and uber-violent.

The character is also a master tracker, which comes into play during the game.

Insomniac promises that you can sniff your way around time, finding the enemies of Mutants.

Before you worry too much about the game’s complexity, know that:

“(Wolverine) culminates in the claw combat, which is really the main gameplay aspect that we put the top priority on.”

Hooray for stabbing! Apparently, you can do it via “a very wide variety of moves.”

The production team confides that Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Mystique are all in the game.

Fans are speculating that they’ve seen Deadpool, but Insomniac is being cagey about that.

You can read more about the game here. All I ask is that it’s closer to Spider-Man than Marvel’s Avengers.
