James Gunn has suggested that the Amazonian warrior Nubia may be coming to the DCU in the ‘not-too-distant future.’
Gunn sat down with Pay or Wait to discuss Superman, but, inevitably, topics arose about the future of the DCU. Namely, could we potentially see Nubia appear someday? “You might be happy in the not-too-distant future,” was Gunn’s response.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Nubia is a powerful and often overlooked character in the DC Universe, originally introduced in 1973 as Wonder Woman’s long-lost fraternal twin sister. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Don Heck, Nubia was the first Black female superhero in DC Comics. Raised on a separate island by a different group of Amazons, she was sculpted from clay just like Diana and brought to life by the gods.
Over the decades, her origin and backstory have been reimagined several times. In modern continuity, Nubia is portrayed as a fierce warrior, trusted leader, and even Queen of the Amazons, ruling over Themyscira with wisdom and strength. She possesses similar powers to Wonder Woman, including superhuman strength, speed, and combat skills, as well as a deep sense of justice.
The cast of Superman is set to include David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. They will all be joined by Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer , Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher MacDonald as Ron Troupe, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard.
Superman will hit theaters in wide release on July 11, 2025.
