Hollywood has plenty of reasons to celebrate, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey propelled theaters to the biggest weekend in box office history.
The previous record was set in 2019, when Avengers: Endgame helped deliver a $402 million domestic weekend.

This time, it was Tom Holland’s Spider-Man who led the way.

The Odyssey, now in its third weekend in theaters, contributed another $51 million, helping push the domestic weekend total to a record-breaking $429 million.
“It’s unbelievable, when you think about it, that we could even get to a number like this,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told NBC News.

“I never thought we’d see another $400 million weekend overall, and I never thought we’d see another $300 million opener domestically. It seemed like an insurmountable mountain to climb.”
A Major Comeback For Movie Theaters
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, movie theaters have struggled to consistently pull audiences away from streaming services and back into cinemas.

The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, then, provided some much-needed relief across the industry.
AMC Celebrates
Among those celebrating was AMC Theatres, which welcomed more than 10.2 million moviegoers across its locations worldwide from Wednesday through Sunday.

That marked the company’s highest-attended domestic and global weekend of the decade and the third-highest attendance weekend in AMC history.
“Our sincerest congratulations to director Destin Daniel Cretton, the entire cast and crew, and our friends at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios on this extraordinary opening weekend for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY,” said AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron.

“It is a powerful and unmistakable reminder that audiences overwhelmingly embrace the theatrical experience when studios release films that audiences want to see and support them with strong marketing campaigns. This is not a new phenomenon this year. This is the ninth different movie title since March to have a gangbusters opening-weekend gross.”
