George Lucas made his first ever appearance at Comic-Con last weekend, unveiling his plans for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Set to open next year in Los Angeles, the new 300,000 square-foot building will house more than 40,000 items from Lucas’s personal collection.
“I’ve been doing this for 50 years now, and then it occurred to me that I don’t know what I am going to do with [all the art] because I refuse to sell it,” Lucas told attendees.

“Art is more about an emotional connection. Not how much it cost, or what celebrity made it. If you have an emotional connection, then it’s art. I’ve worked with hundreds of illustrators in my life, and they’re all brilliant, but they don’t get recognized for anything. This museum is a temple to the people’s art.”
‘Star Wars’ Artifacts
As one would expect, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will include some of the most important artifacts in Star Wars history.

These will include Luke’s X-34 Landspeeder from Star Wars: A New Hope, a 1:1 replica of General Grievous’ TSMEU-6 Wheel Bike from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and a full-scale version of Anakin Skywalker’s N-1 Starfighter from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
The collection will also house speeder bikes from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and concept art from the production of the first six films in the Skywalker saga.
Other Important Piece
In addition to the Star Wars artifacts, the museum will house other significant pieces, including the first drawing of Flash Gordon (1934), original art for Iron Man’s debut comic cover (1968), illustrations by Peanuts‘ creator Chales M. Shultz, and paintings by Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby, and Frida Kahlo, among others.

“It’s one thing that this kind of art [featured] will celebrate because of science fiction. Science fiction is a myth, but we have made it real,” revealed Lucas about the museum’s science fiction artworks set to be displayed. “Humans made it real because of science fiction books and art that makes people say, ‘Oh, we could go to the moon,’ and once that idea is implemented, then we believe we could do it.”
