On March 26, 2025, the world’s eyes were glued to Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated livestream, which slowly unveiled the cast of Avengers: Doomsday.
In the weeks leading up to the event, speculation ran wild as fans tried to guess which heroes would assemble for the multiversal adventure.

Over the course of a six-and-a-half-hour reveal, Marvel confirmed that several familiar faces, including Ant-Man, Black Panther, Thor, Loki, Shang-Chi, and Namor, would be returning. However, the biggest shock came with the announcement that the Fox-era X-Men would officially make their MCU debut in Doomsday.
Among the returning mutants are Beast (Kelsey Grammer), Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), and Cyclops (James Marsden).

While fans were understandably excited, there were some glaring omissions from the X-Men lineup.
What About Jean Grey?
Perhaps the most noticeable absence from the reunited Fox X-Men was Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey.

While Halle Berry’s Storm and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine are perhaps better remembered, Jean Grey served as the heart of the original X-Men trilogy.
Since the original Doomsday announcement, fans have continued to hold out hope that Janssen will somehow return, in spite of the actress’s assertion that she was “never, ever” asked by Marvel.

Those hopes gained new fuel when Chris Claremont bluntly stated that Janssen was, in fact, returning.

Now, however, we have a disappointing update to share.
Janssen Says Marvel Made a Mistake?
During a recent interview with Nerdtropolis, Famke Janssen was asked about her absence from Avengers: Doomsday.
Not mincing her words, the actress stated that omitting Jean Grey was a mistake.

“I think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? I’m just a little me who thinks that,” she said.
Will Jean Grey Return?
While it doesn’t sound like Janssen will suit up for Avengers: Doomsday, we may not have seen the last of her Jean Grey.

For starters, there is always the possibility that Janssen’s omission from the previous cast reveal was meant to keep her character’s inclusion a secret.
For her part, however, Janssen is adamant that she is bad at keeping secrets.
“Terrible,” she said. “I am so bad at keeping secrets that I always say to everyone I’m the worst actor in the world because I, I just— it’s all on my face. You right away will read it.”

Additionally, there is still a chance that Jean could show up in Avengers: Secret Wars.
With Sadie Sink rumored to be playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, however, it appears that Marvel is ready to focus on a new iteration of the character.

So, while the Fox X-Men will get one last hurrah in Avengers: Doomsday, Janssen’s time playing the iconic mutant may have indeed come to an end.
