The 2026 summer movie season has generally been one of ebbs and flows for The Walt Disney Company, and August’s final weekend was no different.
The Mouse played a role in two of the domestic box office’s bigger weekend stories: Spider-Man: Brand New Day reigned as the top-grosser for an astonishing fifth consecutive week, while The Dog Stars limped to a dismal $8 million opening.

‘Brand New Day’ Makes More History

We’ll lead with the news that won’t give a Disney executive a headache.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an additional $22 million this weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. This brings the latest Spidey flick’s domestic total to $891.5 million, good for second all-time at the domestic box office.

The film has now grossed $2.332 billion worldwide, surpassing last year’s Ne Zha 2 as the fourth-highest-earning movie of all time. It’s now only $2 million behind Avatar: The Way of Water for third place, so it will almost certainly swing into that spot in the coming days.
Brand New Day would need an additional $464 million to pass Avengers: Endgame for No. 2 and $590 million to usurp Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time. These are steep numbers, but the film has had tremendous legs thus far.

The movie’s box office run has been one of surprises, so we shouldn’t rule out any possibility. It shattered expectations when it opened to $360 million domestically in late July, making it the biggest box office opening in history.
It’s been breaking financial records left and right ever since. It’s been an unequivocal success, and this weekend was no different.

Brand New Day‘s continued revenue gives Disney a silver lining to close out August, though it should be noted that Sony Pictures is the film’s distributor. Sony, thus, receives the bulk of the profit.
‘The Dog Stars’ Disappoints

Not shining as bright this weekend was The Dog Stars, which opened to just $8 million in 3,300 domestic theaters. The 20th Century-produced adaptation of Peter Heller’s 2012 sci-fi novel has earned $19 million globally against a reported $110 million budget.
Directed by genre luminary Ridley Scott, The Dog Stars was primarily a vehicle for contemporary stars Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley. An $8 million debut shows that they can’t necessarily open a movie just yet.

Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong also star. The film received generally mixed reviews from critics; combine this with the generally banal trailers, and its underperformance is in no way surprising.
The Dog Stars was just the fourth theatrical release from 20th Century Studios this year. May’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 was its only bona fide success, surpassing $600 million worldwide.

This summer has yielded generally mixed results for Disney at the box office. Toy Story 5 has been its biggest winner, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. The aforementioned The Devil Wears Prada 2 also ranks within the top 10 at the worldwide box office this year.

Disney has also released two of the year’s more underwhelming performers. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed $345 million worldwide, the lowest of any live-action Star Wars film, while the live-action Moana remake has lost the studio millions.

Hexed and Avengers: Doomsday seem the most prominent films remaining on Disney’s 2026 slate. Whalefall, a 20th Century-produced thriller, could also make some noise with a timely October release.
