Before Marvel Studios pivoted to Robert Downey Jr. and Avengers: Doomsday, the plan was for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to reassemble for another reason.
The initial plan for a fifth Avengers film was to bring the multiverse together to do battle with Jonathan Majors’ Kang.

Titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, this iteration of the film would have built on the story told in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki.
Marvel’s Big Decision
After Quantumania bombed at the box office and Jonathan Majors found himself in legal trouble, Marvel decided to change course.

Eventually, the studio settled on Robert Downey Jr. and Doctor Doom as the next big bad.
When the decision was made to overhaul Avengers 5, director Destin Daniel Cretton exited the project.

Now, he has finally broken his silence on that period of time.
Cretton Breaks His Silence
In a recent interview with IndieWire, Cretton admitted to being “scared” when The Kang Dynasty fell apart.

“When [‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’] wasn’t going to happen, I was a little bit scared that my relationship with Kevin [Feige] maybe was going to change,” he recalled.
In an interview with ScreenRant, he dove into why he didn’t stay attached to the film.

“Avengers 5 didn’t work out for many reasons,” Cretton said, after a pause. “I had a conversation with Kevin at that time about, you know, the reasons why I didn’t feel like the right fit for the story that they were chasing.
All’s Well That Ends Well
Thankfully, that was not the case. In fact, Cretton would eventually be offered the opportunity to direct Spider-Man: Brand New Day instead.
“But it didn’t at all. On the day that wasn’t going to work out, we were talking about what could work out,” he continued.
“And Spidey was mentioned, but it wasn’t like an offer by any means. It took a bit before that happened. From the inside looking out, it’s not nearly as dramatic as it is from the outside looking in.”

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day currently tracking toward one of the biggest openings of all time, things clearly worked out for Cretton.
Perhaps more importantly, the director has remained firmly in the Marvel fold, even after the Avengers: The Kang Dynasty disaster.
