Clayface movie inspired by Batman: The Animated Series

DC Comics

Mike Flanagan has shared that his script for the Clayface movie very much pulled from Batman: The Animated Series.

Speaking with ComicBook in support of his upcoming The Life of Chuck, has shared that the 2-part “Feat of Clay” was what inspired his take on the Clayface character.

“Of course it was. I mean that is the perfect [story],” said Flanagan. “‘Feat of Clay,’ Ron Perlman, to me, that’s it. That two-parter knocked me out. The short answer is that is absolutely that is what inspired my script. That is the world I wanted to live in. Batman: The Animated Series when I was growing up was my Batman. As much as [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, The Animated Series really was my Batman.”

Flanagan did confirm that the screenplay is going through some revisions currently, but he hopes that some of his version will still show up on screen.

Rumors of this project date back to 2023, but it seems things are finally coming together. Flannagan has written the first version of the script for the project. Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will be producers via their 6th & Idaho Productions company.

Also, relating to the report from 2023, sources have repeatedly made it clear that the pitch is unrelated to The Batman: Part II. With Reeves serving as a producer, that will raise questions, but he was also involved with the Batman: Caped Crusader series, which was unrelated to his films.

Flanagan, who directed the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, has not been quiet about his passion for Clayface. He stated in 2021 that he was “really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.”

While Clayface has appeared in animated form and video games many times over, he has never jumped to a live-action theatrical film. We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of these talks, but the character may finally be heading toward his time in the spotlight.

The untitled Clayface movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 11, 2026.
