It seems like music doesn’t just flow in Monali’s soul but also in her blood. Shakti Thakur, Monali’s father, was also a recognized playback singer and actor in the Bengali movie industry. In fact, her sister is a playback singer in the Bengali film industry as well.
Monali Thakur’s singing debut
The well-known singer started her career back in 1999. Her first song ever was a Bengali children’s song titled Choi Choi Choi Tipi Tipi, released in 1999. However, the singer debuted in Bollywood with the song Kabool Kar Le in the 2006 film Jaan-E-Mann.

The Filmfare Award winner started out her career with small competitions in school and eventually began working in Bollywood. However, the turning point in her stardom came when she participated in one of India’s biggest singing reality shows, Indian Idol 2, in 2006. Even though she did not win the show, her magical voice seemed to have struck a chord with the audience and listeners.
Turning point of Monali Thakur’s career
In terms of her career, though, her life changed when she got the offer to sing for the film Race. Initially, Monali was offered only one song, the iconic Zara Zara Touch Me. However, impressed by her talent, the film’s directors, Abbas-Mustan, and music director Pritam decided to get her onboard to sing Khwab Dekhein Jhoote Moothe as well. Both of these songs ended up becoming hits that redefined what Thakur’s professional life looked like.

Monali has won not only hearts with her songs but also awards. She received a Filmfare Award for her famous hit Sanwar Loon, from the movie Lootera. Moreover, she also bagged a National Film Award for Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha
Monali Thakur is a dancer as well
The talents of Monali Thakur are not limited to singing. She is also a phenomenal dancer. In fact, she has trained in Bharatnatyam, salsa, and hip-hop.

Other than singing and dancing. Monali has also experimented with acting. She starred in the film Lakshmi, released back in 2014. The bold and emotionally charged film has a narrative that revolves around child trafficking and prostitution.
