Who was bold actress Devika Rani?
Devika Rani was born in Visakhapatnam into an educated and affluent family. Both her parents were doctors and valued their daughters’ education. This led to Devika being sent to a boarding school in England at the age of nine, when girls were rarely allowed to study in society. She later completed her acting studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
When did Devika Rani get married?
In 1928, Devika met filmmaker Himansu Rai and got married in 1929. After marriage, Devika not only turned to acting but also gained a keen understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking. She handled costume design and art direction for Ray’s silent film, A Throw of Dice, released in 1929.
Devika Rani’s longest kissing scene
The couple traveled to Germany, where they trained in filmmaking at Berlin’s renowned UFA Studios. Himanshu Rai’s next film, Karma, was directed by himself and starred Devika as the heroine. The film was released in both Hindi and English in 1933. Karma gained particular recognition for its lengthy and daring kissing scene, a first in Indian cinema.

Although the film failed at the box office, its bold scenes created a sensation at the time. People began questioning how an actress could perform such scenes so openly. Devika faced severe criticism and opposition from society. Despite this, she remained undeterred and pursued her acting career.
What awards did Devika Rani receive?
Devika Rani’s contributions and talent were recognized by the nation. Devika Rani holds the distinction of being the first recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema. She was also honored with the Padma Shri.
