Sandman season 2 has come to an end with Death: The High Cost of Living, but is it worth your time.

One of the biggest comics of the 1990s, Sandman has languished around Hollywood for years looking for a live-action adaptation to become a reality. At long last, Netflix made it a reality, and it feels as though we have already sped through what fans had waited years to see.

The main part of Sandman came to an end with the release of Season 2, Vol. 2 on July 24. As we knew, however, there was an epilogue releasing on July 31, which would adapt Death: The High Cost of Living.

The strengths and weaknesses

This self-contained story hinges entirely on your love of Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death. Colin Morgan as Sexton Furnival is important as well, but if you don’t buy Howell-Baptiste as Death, then none of the rest of this will matter.

Luckily, she has been fantastic in this role and continues to be so throughout this special episode.

For those that may not be familiar with this story, for one day every 100 years, Death takes on the life of a mortal. It’s in service to her understanding her job that much better. She knows who and what she is, but for 24 hours she goes through what it means to be a human being and experience their trials and tribulations for herself.

Along for the ride is Sexton, who, up until the moment he meets Death, had been contemplating taking his own life. After spending some time with her, he’s just not so sure.

After the darkness of the end of the main Sandman series, this hour-long special episode serves as a welcomed palette cleanser. There are no other members of the Endless here, no politics of cosmic beings, just a woman living her life, no matter just how short it may be.

It’s well worth your time, and a nice little jaunt through the closure of this series.
