James Gunn has announced the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
It appears that DC Studios is aiming to make every summer a bit more “super.” Superman was released on July 11, 2025, Supergirl will release on June 26, 2026, and now a Superman follow-up entitled Man of Tomorrow is flying into theaters in July 2027.
DC Studios co-chair James Gunn announced the news with an image by Jim Lee showing Superman next to Lex Luthor wearing his infamous purple and green battlesuit.
It should be noted that Gunn did not use the word “sequel” in his post, and he had made it clear in several interviews that he has been working on a ‘follow-up’ to Superman, and has never called it a ‘sequel.’
Appearing on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast in August, Gunn spoke about the Superman follow-up. While he didn’t go into great detail, he said that the story takes place “within the group of characters we’ve already met and Superman is an important element.”
“I’m done with the treatment,” he added. “That treatment is done. I’m now into the screenwriting phase. I’m really happy with it, and we’re already prepping and figuring out where we’re shooting everything. That will not be too long.”
This mirrors comments he made to The Hollywood Reporter at the Peacemaker season 2 premiere. Gunn was asked about the next film to feature Superman, Gunn said, “I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
