While Marvel Studios fully integrated Deadpool into both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the Disney brand, the character’s future remains unclear.

Despite the historic success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has yet to announce what the Merc with the Mouth’s next appearance will be.

Now, however, Shawn Levy has given an interesting update on the character’s future.

The Key To a Successful Sequel

During a recent appearance on the On Film…With Kevin McCarthy podcast, Shawn Levy was asked about a potential Deadpool 4.

Before diving into the franchise specifically, the director shared his thoughts about sequels in general.

“I’m a fan of a lot of threes in the trilogies of movies,” he explained. “I love Back to the Future 3. I love Return of the King. [Endgame was] such a superior audience experience,” because “that took 10 years and how many movies to earn that ‘On your left.’”

Why ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Worked

Turning his thoughts towards Deadpool, Levy emphasized the importance of a connection between the audience and the character.

“When you are telling a story that has the benefit of [a] legacy connection between the audience and the characters, you’re sort of like on second base already,” he continued.

While Ryan Reynolds has reportedly already begun floating ideas for Deadpool’s next adventure, Marvel has yet to make anything official.

What About ‘Deadpool 4’?

For his part, Levy has also considered what Deadpool 4 would look like; however, he knows it would be a daunting task.

“I don’t know about the rule of threes, ’cause the truth is, as I contemplate, for instance, ‘Okay, how do we make another Deadpool movie?’ Sequels are hard. They are dauntingly hard,” Levy explained.

“I made three Night at the Museum movies. It kicked my ass every time. And so, yeah, having seen how the sausage of sequels is made, I find the whole subject a little stressful because you want to get it right.”

While it seems certain that we will see Deadpool (and Wolverine) appear in the MCU again, for now, fans are going to have to wait.

With Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars on the horizon, the future of the MCU is too unclear to make any bold predictions.
