Peacemaker Season 2: Cena & Gunn Tease DC Cameos

HBO Max’s hit DC series Peacemaker returns with its highly anticipated second season premiering on August 21, 2025. Series star John Cena and creator James Gunn recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to offer fans an exclusive glimpse into what’s in store.

New Dance Moves and Surprising Twists

The iconic opening dance sequence, beloved by fans for its humorous originality, is getting a fresh update. Gunn revealed a tantalizing taste of what to expect from it this time around. “I’ll give you an exclusive: You get to see Eagly try to dance for the first time,” said Gunn. “So that’s really something. He is not the best at it, but he tries to really join in the dance sequence at the end. He’s got a little pose this time.”

Cena went on to add, “This time around, everybody looked at it through a different lens, knowing how much the audience enjoyed the first one. [We knew] this is going to be a cornerstone of the show, so let’s dive in. Everyone gave their best in season 1, but I just think people now know the importance of it and hopefully it shines through in season 2.”

Gunn went on to confirm it will be a different song this time as well, and he knows he’s taking a risk. “I think there’s 4 billion views of the dance sequence on TikTok, so when you have something that’s that viral, I just wanted to do a good job with the [new] dance sequence. He went on to add, “I don’t know if the dance sequence ever is going to one-up the first, because no one expected it. It was a complete surprise, and you just can’t replicate that. However, the surprises within the show itself, I think, replicate that many times over, because there’s so many more twists and turns in this season with what happens and what you find out about this universe.”

Production Delays Lead to Richer Storytelling

Season 2 experienced delays due to Gunn’s prior commitments to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and his role as co-head of DC Studios. However, these delays allowed Gunn and his creative team more time to deeply integrate Peacemaker into the broader DC Universe, hinting at narrative connections with the upcoming Superman film.

“You’ve seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman,” said Gunn. “The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2… We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela [Merced] and Nathan [Fillion] and Sean [Gunn], and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show.”

Exciting New Characters and Cameos

John Cena’s Peacemaker won’t be alone in this new adventure. Season 2 introduces new characters, including Michael Rooker portraying Red St. Wild, an eagle hunter set as Eagly’s nemesis, and Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury. Additionally, expect intriguing cameos from prominent DC figures such as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Maxwell Lord, reinforcing the show’s connections to the greater DC Universe.

A Deeper Dive into the DC Universe

Fans can anticipate Season 2 of Peacemaker to skillfully blend humor, heart, and action while expanding its footprint within DC’s evolving landscape. Gunn and Cena promise a season filled with richer storytelling, deeper character development, and more of the irreverent humor that made the first season a hit.

The returning cast will include John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, and Steve Agee as John Economos. New additions include Sol Rodriguez as Sasha Bordeaux, and Tim Meadows as Langston Gleury.

Peacemaker season 2 is set to debut on Aug. 21, 2025.
