Everyone old is new again, especially if you work for Sony Pictures.

Yes, Sony’s Marvel division just got funny again. And I mean George Carlin at the top of his game-level hysterical.

Let’s assess the ridiculousness in MarvelBlog News.

Time Is a Flat Circle

I know what you’re thinking because I’m thinking it, too.

“Surely, Sony wouldn’t be foolish enough to think that it should make more Spider-Man spinoffs.”

We believe that because we’re applying logic and reason to the situation.

You and I remember monstrosities like Morbius and Madame Web.

These are films that would disgrace literally any studio with their existence.

They’re critically reviled box office bombs, which should be enough to discourage a company.

Well, Sony thinks differently than you and me! They’re not deterred by a little thing like unmitigated failure!

Sure, you may hear the words “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe” and scoff, but what do you know?!

Sony runs a movie studio, and you don’t do that unless you’re willing to run IP into the ground.

So, buckle up, everybody! We forgot to perform the ritual to keep the dead good and buried.

That means we’re getting another few years of comic book movies nobody wants.

That’s great news for the directors whose films you’re never gonna watch.

For you and me, well, time is a flat circle. We’ve all done this dance a time or two.

Yes, I’m being unusually dismissive and aggressive right now, but come on!

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is synonymous with abject failure. Nobody wants this.

If you want to get a snort of derision from a complete stranger, you should say, “It’s Morbin’ Time!”

For double the fun, toss in “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders just before she died.”

You understand why my expectations are low about another round of this particular nonsense.

Still, I’m a professional, so let’s take the news story seriously for a moment.

I suppose there’s a chance that you’re different from me and haven’t lost all hope yet.

Hooray! More Sony Spider-Man Spinoffs!

Okay, is that better? I’m officially changing my tone for this, the news section of the story.

Here’s what just happened. Sony CEO and Chairman Tom Rothman promises a “fresh reboot.”

Basically, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) will undergo a hard reboot with a new team.

This group’s sole assignment will be to reinvigorate the franchise with new hit movies.

Rothman spoke on a podcast, responding to the question of whether the SSU was dead.

The head of Sony emphatically stated that his studio has no intention of walking away.

Now, the line of questioning felt like a cross-examination, with Rothman often replying in guarded fashion.

Still, we should take the executive at his word when he indicates that Sony means business.

In fact, Rothman sees a positive in all the recent failures. He thinks it’s creating demand.

Specifically, the failures of the recent projects forced Sony to stop making the movies.

Now, Rothman believes that fans will begin to miss SSU titles, increasing their desire for new content.

According to him, “Scarcity has value…you’ve got to make the audience miss you.”

So, we most assuredly will get SSU releases in future years. The only question is when. Probably.

Rothman is 71 years old, and these are his comments. A different Sony executive may feel otherwise.

Since Rothman has reached the age where succession becomes a discussion, this conversation isn’t finite.

Circumstances could change, and a lot depends on how well Spider-Man: Brand New Day performs.

Should a Spider-Man title disappoint, an admittedly unlikely proposition, all bets are off.

Rothman (or whoever) would struggle to justify more films from side characters if Spidey isn’t selling tickets.

Conversely, a successful Spider-Man movie containing breakout characters could expedite the process.

Sony’s situation here is obvious, even to casual Marvel fans.

The studio has paid for the licensing rights to all Spider-related characters.

To maximize the revenue from that investment, Sony needs more SSU movies.

The problem is that none of these characters has proven the least bit desirable so far.

Okay, I’ll grant you the exception of Venom, even though the third film disappointed.

Still, Tom Hardy ain’t getting any younger, and he sounds over the franchise to boot.

Right now, the only good thing about Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is…Spider-Man.

By the way, Rothman confided that there was a hiccup with Spider-Man: No Way Home as well.

China refused to exhibit the film for an absolutely ridiculous reason. The Statue of Liberty appears onscreen.

I’m dead serious. Rothman confirmed that was the issue while brushing aside the matter.

As he pointed out, the film earned $1.9 billion without China, so the banning had little effect.

If China had exhibited the movie, it likely would have crossed $2 billion, but that’s the only ramification.

As for the SSU, well, I’d quote something snide from Kraven the Hunter, but that’d be impossible.

Somebody would have to watch the film first to know quotes from it.

No, I don’t have high expectations for the reboot of SSU. Sony’s alienating Bad Bunny was a devastating mistake.
