This week in MarvelBlog News: Sony gets its act together.

Waitaminute, I better check my notes. That can’t possibly be right.

Let There Be Noir

Okay, let’s start with some genuinely surprising news. Here’s a good Marvel trailer:

Yes, I know you wouldn’t expect a quality trailer from Sony, but here we are.

A long time ago, Amazon and Sony had agreed to create a series of Spider-Man-related series.

Most of those ideas collapsed, yet Spider-Noir survived, and here we are.

Occasionally popular actor Nicholas Cage appears to have picked the ideal role.

The actor just feels right in this role, which is less comic book movie and more gumshoe absurdity.

Cage is clearly channeling Humphrey Bogart as a frustrated sleuth with a hard life.

The difference is that Cage apparently decides to wear a mask (and hat and goggles) and fight crime.

Well, the only thing we hear about him fighting is people in a bar. So, he may be insane.

That would definitely explain why he’s suddenly wearing the mask.

Whatever the explanation, this show looks like Sony’s answer to Werewolf by Night.

To wit, the single-episode MCU title debuted as a black-and-white program.

A year later, Marvel reintegrated color in case fans preferred to watch it that way.

Spider-Noir will start that way, with the commercial explaining how it will work.

Fans will have their choice of “Authentic Black & White” or “Full Color” screenings.

What does that mean? Well, my guess is that people will watch each episode twice.

That’s the best way to compare whether it’s more enjoyable as a noir or a comic book title.

Folks, I’ll level with you that I’ve been skeptical about this project since it was announced.

After watching this trailer, I’m absolutely giddy. Wonder Man may have competition as the best Marvel program this winter!

What’s the word you’ve been hoping Sony would say? We all know it’s Spider-Gwen.

Well, this past week, Sony said the thing! No, this is not a drill. Somebody at Sony got smart.

I realize how skeptical you must be in reading that, which is totally fair. But I have a link!

Here’s The Hollywood Reporter quoting Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville.

Who are they? Belson and de Froberville are the Co-Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation.

So, yes, we’re talking about an animated movie. Sony isn’t quite ready to make $1.5 billion on live-action Spider-Gwen yet.

Why not? You’d have to ask Sony. I’m too tired of trying to come up with reasons to explain their incompetence.

Still, the one thing Sony does well is Spider-Man, and that apparently includes Spider variants.

Spider-Man: Across the Multi-Verse was an absolute masterpiece, partially because of two characters.

One is obviously Spider-Gwen, upon whom the directors framed the narrative.

Seriously, the movie begins and ends with her, as she leaves one band but then starts another.

And the other breakout star, at least in my house, is Mayday Parker, the cutest comic book baby ever.

Rumors are flying that Sony has contemplated movies with both characters.

No, Really

Now, we have confirmation about one, thanks to this interview about a movie you don’t know, GOAT.

The duo wouldn’t detail what’s happening with future projects, declaring, “I’m not allowed to say. “

That’s in response to a question about Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen. But then they added:

“We are active on both, which means, yeah. Sony is going to make a Spider-Gwen movie.

The bad news from this reveal is that it probably (but not certainly) pushes a live-action film.

I doubt Sony would want two simultaneous Spider-Gwen movies, although I’m on record that it’s the right play.

Then again, do we ever expect Sony to make the right play with its Spider-Man spinoffs?

A good trailer and a positive movie update feels like an embarrassment of riches for them.

Apparently, The Punisher standalone episode on Disney+ will be entitled Punisher: One Shot Special.

The current belief is that Marvel will unveil it this summer…and that’s not all.

Rumors persist that the various members of The Defenders may have grander plans.

Marvel may be prepping them for a movie appearance, which frankly sounds too good to be true.

So, let’s just say that I don’t buy that rumor. As a Jessica Jones fanatic, I kinda have to mention it, though.

On the Super Bowl front, we got absolutely no Marvel, which was frustrating.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday out this year, it feels like a glaring oversight.

Speaking of which, buzz for Brand New Day has really turned around recently.

The prevailing belief is that Daniel Destin Cretton has somehow created a good film.

Given all the obstacles of the short turnaround, that would be incredible.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I felt Sony had rushed this project too much.

Thus, I’m pleasantly surprised by these updates, but I’ll also offer a word of caution.

At this point, the only people who have seen the dailies work for Sony. They’re a bit biased.

Finally, Tramell Tillman’s Brand New Day character has apparently been revealed.

Presuming that the reports are accurate, he’s portraying William Metzger.

Dutiful comic book fans know the character as the leader of the Anti-Mutant Militia.

He’d garnered enough celebrity to consider running for President, but then Magneto killed him.

I wonder if he’ll meet a similar feat due to a different Marvel villain this time.
