‘Marvel Zombies’ Was Changed From a Film to a Streaming Series Because of THIS Character

The next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will unfold tomorrow when Marvel Zombies debuts on Disney+.

Though not set on the MCU’s Sacred Timeline, Marvel Zombies will nevertheless expand the Marvel story, transporting audiences to an alternate universe where a small team of heroes must contend with the Zombie apocalypse.

While Marvel Zombies is technically a spinoff of What If…? Season 1, the series was actually envisioned initially as a movie.

The plan changed, however, so that Marvel could include Spider-Man in the series.

The Big Change

As has been frequently discussed, Marvel Studios currently can include Spider-Man in animated television. Sony, however, owns the movie rights to the character.

During a recent appearance on the Who Let Us Out podcast, Marvel’s Head of Streaming and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, discussed how the Spider-Man rights affected Marvel Zombies.

“Sony has [the] other rights. We can use Spider-Man in a half-hour animation, which is why we’re able to make Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man as well. But that meant that we had to take our big epic story and break it into four chapters, which I actually think helped the storytelling,” he recalled.”

More Characters Could Follow

While the shift to television allowed Marvel Zombies, Winderbaum says that there are more characters that the team would like to include.

“There are lots that we still talk about, you know? Hopefully, if we get a chance to make more, we’ll be able to tell their stories, too.”
