EA Cancels Its Planned Black Panther Game Amid Another Round of Layoffs

In what has become an alarmingly frequent occurrence in the video game industry, Electronic Arts is shuttering its Cliffhanger Games and canceling the planned Black Panther video game that the developer was working on.

Initially announced in 2023, the Black Panther game was to be part of a three-game deal between Marvel and EA that also included an Iron Man game.

While updates on the title have been few and far between since the initial announcement, the Black Panther game was revealed to be a single-player, open-world game through a series of job listings.

Another Round of Layoffs

In addition to closing Cliffhanger, EA is laying off employees on its mobile and central teams.

“These decisions are hard,” EA Entertainment president Laura Miele wrote in a letter to staff.

“They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

What About the Other Marvel Titles?

As previously noted, EA has seen an increasing number of layoffs in recent years. With the cancellation of the Black Panther, the future of the other Marvel-EA titles remains unclear.

It should be noted, however, that Motive Studio is developing the Iron Man game and is seemingly moving towards its release.
