If you follow the production of Hollywood’s biggest films, you have likely noticed that the majority of the movies are filmed in the United Kingdom.

Since the United Kingdom introduced the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit, giving studios a cash reimbursement of up to 25% of the money they spend in the country, major Hollywood producers have flocked to the country to film.

Now, a new report from Forbes has pulled the curtain back on just how much money Disney has saved by filming in the United Kingdom.

Disney Has Ramped Up Production in the U.K.

According to Disney, the studio has spent $4.8 billion on production across the United Kingdom since 2019. In that time frame, Disney has produced 41 shows, 29 feature films, and supported more than 32,000 jobs.

Looking ahead, Disney has no plans to slow down its U.K. production. Earlier this year, Kevin Feige announced that Marvel is locked into the Untied Kingdom for future films.

“Five or six years ago, where everybody was fighting for stage space in the great expansion…we had the opportunity to lock up Pinewood, which is why many of our movies will be there for the foreseeable future,” he told Variety.

Going forward, Disney has plans to invest another $5 billion over the next four years on films, television, and streaming shows.

Massive Savings

Data from the British Film Institute has shown that Disney has saved $2.2 billion in tax credits from filming in the U.K. over the past fifteen years.

The biggest film beneficiaries were The Rise of Skywalker, The Force Awakens, The Marvels, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid.

On streaming, the most significant rebates came from the production of Andor, which recouped over $100 million.

While Hollywood has long been synonymous with blockbuster films, the United Kingdom has clearly dethroned Tinseltown. Perhaps more importantly, it is showing no signs of slowing down.
