We’re sad to hear that writer Peter David has passed away, his family has announced.

David had a long career in comics, prose, and television. Perhaps his best known work was his 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk, which defined multiple aspects of this character that are still in place to this day, most notably the different “green” and “grey” parts of Bruce Banner’s alter ego. He also made an impact on DC Comics characters with extended tenures on Aquaman and Supergirl, and co-wrote the DC vs. Marvel intercompany crossover with Ron Marz. David wrote several novel adaptations of popular comic book films as well, including The Rocketeer, all three Raimi Spider-Man movies, and– fittingly– Hulk and The Incredible Hulk, along with original novels set in the Star Trek universe.

No stranger to the Dark Knight and the extended Batfamily, David wrote the acclaimed novel adaptation for Batman Forever, and wrote every issue of the original Young Justice comic book series. His work on Young Justice capitalized on the popularity of Robin, Superboy, and Impulse, taking characters that were once seen as sidekicks and making them a viable, functioning team of their own. The series also included other teen heroes such as Wonder Girl, Secret, the Ray, Arrowette, and Captain Marvel, Jr., all before they “graduated” to become Teen Titans. David even wrote several episodes of the wildly popular television series Young Justice, throughout its first three seasons.

He was 68.
