Last time we left Selina, she was facing serious danger. Which I would argue is good, as this story has felt extremely boring so far, with the stakes so dull they couldn’t pierce through a vampire’s heart. Does the latest issue do anything to improve the blandness of the plot?

Finally, some context…far too late
Issue 75 finally gives the reader so much-needed context regarding how things got so bad in the past during Selina’s time as Evie. Yes, this entire issue is a flashback to the heist and how everything went wrong to the point that everyone on Selina’s old crew is being offed one after another.
Now, I’m not a fan of flashbacks. Especially in this story, where the entire plot is happening because of some unspecified event in Selina’s past that had never been revealed before (and probably won’t be referenced once this run is done). But frankly, after six issues of dragging its feet and driving my interest in this story to nothingness, it’s a relief to get an actual ounce of logic for once. Because we finally have some context for why things are the way they are.

That being said, we’re six issues into this plot. This isn’t the first time that Torunn Grønbekk has employed flashbacks in her story, and they’ve done nothing to enhance the plot. In fact, I would argue that they were an active detriment by halting the flow of the plot that was already floating on a stagnant body of water. So the fact that this story has better flashbacks with better characters is a little annoying, considering the drek we’ve had to suffer through with the indistinguishable Belov brothers.

Still, this is the strongest issue of the series so far. Which leaves me a bit torn. On one hand, this context is here far too late for most readers who probably dropped this series a while back out of boredom. On the other hand, this is valuable context for the readers who stuck around. Well, it’s “context.” I assume people weren’t dying to know who Long John was in this issue after he died in the last one.

As for the art, it remains the high point of the series. Patricio Delpeche has been great, and I hope he gets a better project later down the line. He is doing the art on Void Rivals, which I hear is pretty popular, so good for him.

Overall
Catwoman #75 is a step in the right direction for the series, finally providing some answers as to why Selina would be targeted for her past actions. But the fact that this series is so late with these answers, with the additional fact that this series has read like an indie comic that somehow got the rights to Catwoman from DC and no one else (just look at the pages provided), means there probably aren’t enough people around to care at this point.
Score: 7.5/10
