Captain America: Brave New World topped the box office once again this weekend, marking the third straight frame in which the Marvel blockbuster reigned supreme.
In its third weekend in theaters, the Anthony Mackie-led Captain America film added another $15 million to its domestic total, a 47% drop off week-over-week.

Here is the latest.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Is Running Out of Steam
The fourth installment in the Captain America franchise, and the first bereft of Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers, Brave New World got off to a better than expected start, crossing the $100 million mark in its opening weekend.
Since its soaring debut, however, Brave New World has come crashing down to earth. Last weekend, the film grossed $28.2 million, a 67% drop from its opening frame. While that number was not a disaster, it also wasn’t great.

Now that Captain America 4 has suffered another precipitous drop, it has become clear that the film does not have the momentum to overcome middling reviews and poor audience scores.
Will the Film Turn A Profit
The good news for Marvel is that Brave New World held up better in its third weekend than 2023’s disastrous Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and 2022’s Thor: Love & Thunder.

Still, with a 180+ budget, Disney needed Brave New World to have the kind of extended box office run that Mufasa: The Lion King recently had to reach profitability. Instead, it looks like the film will go down as another flash-in-the-pan Marvel release.
While it is still too early to declare Captain America: Brave New World a disaster, the film has certainly not built on the momentum gifted to it by last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine. At this point, it also looks like Disney and Marvel will lose money on the film.
Ahead of the film’s debut in theaters, numerous reports indicated that Captain America: Brave New World had fared poorly in test screenings and undergone multiple reshoots. With that in mind, Marvel’s expectations for the film were surely tempered.

Nevertheless, it is hard to deem Mackie’s first big screen adventure as Captain America anything but disappointing. Hopefully, however, he gets another chance.
