‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Is Running Out of Box Office Steam

Captain America: Brave New World

Following the historic success of Deadpool & Wolverine last year, all eyes were on Captain America: Brave New World as the first MCU film of 2025 flew into theaters.

Leading up to the release of Captain America 4, there were numerous reports that the film had performed poorly in test screenings and had undergone several reshoots.

Already the first Captain America film bereft of Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers, it quickly became apparent that Brave New World had its work cut out for it at the box office.

A Strong Start

Despite the negative buzz, Captain America: Brave New World got off to a better-than-expected start at the box office, delivering a $100+ million debut. With little competition on the horizon, hope sprang anew that the film could become another Marvel success.

Unfortunately, Brave New World‘s debut weekend was also plagued by poor audience reviews. By the time the film reached its second weekend, the wheels began to fall off.

A Moral Victory?

Now that the dust has settled on the Captain America film’s fourth weekend in theaters, we have a fairly good idea of where the movie will end its box office run. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look pretty.

As of this writing, Captain America: Brave New World has grossed $178.38 million at the global box office. Of that total, $88.84 million came from North America.

While those numbers are good enough to push Brave New World past Captain America: The First Avenger (which grossed $370 million worldwide), it is fairly clear now that the film will not break even.

The Film Will Not Break Even

With a $180+ million budget, Brave New World likely needed to end its box office run around the $500 million mark to reach profitability. With the film quickly running out of steam and a slew of new movies set to be released in the coming weeks, it does not look like Captain America 4 can get there.

While Brave New World was never going to reach the heights of the last installment in the Captain America franchise, Civil War, Marvel was surely hoping for better.

The good news for the studio is that the buzz surrounding Thunderbolts* has been largely positive, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps looks like it will be a blockbuster.
