The first Aztec Batman trailer has been released, giving us the first look at a unique new take on the Dark Knight and his Rogues Gallery.
During a panel at #SDCC, DC Comics officially released the first visuals for the alternative mythology project, Aztec Batman: Clash Of Empires. According to the original HBOMAX press release, the film will follow the journey of a young priest in his training to fight against Cortez and the conquistadors who killed his father. However, instead of Bruce Wayne, Aztec Batman will focus on “Yohualli Coatl,” and several new Aztec versions of Poison Ivy, Two-Face, The Joker, and a Jaguar version of Catwoman! The footage shows off its unique 16th-century Mesoamerican setting and era-themed cast of characters. Incidentally, the film will feature bilingual versions, with Jay Hernandez (Suicide Squad) and Raymond Cruz (Breaking Bad) in the English one. In contrast, the Spanish version, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, will feature the voices of Horacio García Rojas, Omar Chaparro, and Álvaro Morte (Money Heist) among others.
In the time of the Aztec empire, tragedy strikes Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy, when his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. To warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger, Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlán. There, he trains in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan with his mentor, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spanish invasion and avenge his father’s death. Along the way, he encounters key figures like the fierce Jaguar Woman and the enchanting Forest Ivy.
The film comes by way of director Juan Meza-Léon from a screenplay by Ernie Altbacker with animation primarily from Warner Bros. Animation, Ánima, and Chatrone (Book of Life). Producers include José C. García de Letona, Fernando De Fuentes S., Carina Schulze, Aaron D. Berger, Jim Krieg, and Kimberly S. Moreau, with Sam Register, Tomás Yankelevich, and Michael Uslan as executive producers.
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires/Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, will be available in the US exclusively on digital on September 19 on Digital from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home and more. Additionally, the film will be available to purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD online and in-store at major retailers September 23rd.
