While it has long been known that Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel also has other plans for Punisher.
According to a new Deadline report, Marvel is developing a Punisher standalone special for Disney+. Bernthal will star in the project and co-write the special alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green, who will also direct.

Like Werewolf By Night, the special is expected to be a one-off.
Bernthal’s Return as Punisher
Unlike Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox, who have made Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appearances outside of the Netflix Defenders series, Bernthal has not played Frank Castle since The Punisher ended in 2019.
In recent years, however, the actor has been open about his fondness for playing the Punisher and his willingness to reprise his role should Marvel call upon him.
Following a creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel did just that.
‘Born Again’s’ Overhaul Changed Everything
Initially, it did not look like Marvel would include the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again.
The studio originally intended for Born Again to serve as a clean break from the original Netflix series. That changed, however, when Kevin Feige and his team reviewed the show’s completed footage during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.

The studio quickly determined that Born Again was not working and eventually decided to overhaul the series and tie it into the original Daredevil show. Thus, the road was paved for Bernthal to return.
When Will ‘Punisher’ Debut?
The Punisher special will debut in 2026, alongside Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. At this time, Marvel has not revealed any further information about the upcoming special.
