MARVEL.COM: Tell us about the kingdom of Kironia. What should a weary traveler expect to encounter in this realm?
PREETI CHHIBBER: I can tell you that Kironia is under a time of potential upheaval. Prince Steve Rogers is missing, the King is being weird, and Peter and MJ are trying to get by as local bards when MJ is suddenly called away… (dun dun dunnn). Really though, this is some of our favorite Marvel characters in tabletop gaming inspired fantasy setting, which—as someone who has been playing the same campaign with her friends for going on five years now—was so, so fun to create.
MARVEL.COM: In REALMGUARD INFINITY COMIC, we meet a lot of familiar faces in a brand new setting. What were some of the joys and challenges of bringing these Marvel heroes into a medieval world?
PREETI CHHIBBER: As with approaching any alterna-universe, I think the thing is just making sure you’re hitting on those character truths—what kind of person is Peter Parker—and making sure they stay consistent in the new world you’re dropping them into. I loved thinking about what kinds of roles these characters would play in-world…
Peter and MJ were immediately bards, there was no question; some of the others it took a little more exploration to figure out where they would fit in. I don’t want to spoil, but there’s one character I’m particularly excited to see in a few issues.
MARVEL.COM: What made the Silk-Tongued Spider and Lady Jackpot the right characters to lead this adventure?
PREETI CHHIBBER: They’re sort of the every-person in this situation, thrust into a situation they weren’t prepared for and having to figure it out as it goes along. In-world, they don’t have the societal power of some of the other characters, so it adds a layer of relatability for the readers (I hope!).
MARVEL.COM: What did artist Lorenzo Tammetta bring to the story that surprised or delighted you?
PREETI CHHIBBER: Oh my goodness, I cannot say enough what a wonderful experience it was opening my email and seeing Lorenzo’s art come in. Every character was clearly drawn with such care and really thinking about what they would be like in this universe. I sent one panel of the same character I referenced above with just a note, “am obsessed with [character].” Lorenzo just gets the energy a project like this needs.
MARVEL.COM: Some of the character designs were provided by superstar Peach Momoko. What was your initial reaction to those? How did they influence the way you approached the story?
PREETI CHHIBBER: Peach’s designs helped hone the voice of some of the characters—and there was this surprising line of whimsy to some of the sketches that unlocked some of the potential tone in my head.
MARVEL.COM: What are you most excited for readers to see?
PREETI CHHIBBER: I think just what characters pop up and how they fit into this fantasy world, because that was half the fun in writing it!
