‘X-Men ‘97’ Explained: Clan Askani and Apocalypse’s Reign in the Distant Future

RACHEL SUMMERS AND THE ASKANI

In another dystopian timeline, Earth-811, Cyclops and Jean Grey had a daughter named Rachel Summers. She time-traveled to the present day and joined the X-Men and used her immense telepathic powers as the heroic Marvel Girl and Phoenix. But when an incident in the timestream sent her to Apocalypse’s world, she formed a group of resistance fighters called the Clan Askani, as detailed in X-MEN: PHOENIX (1999) #1 by John Francis Moore and Pascal Alixe.

After a failed attempt on Apocalypse’s life, Rachel began gathering his opponents and formed Clan Askani, becoming known as Mother Askani. She recruited telepathic mutants like Blaquesmith and the prophetic Order of Witnesses. With a near-religious regard for Charles Xavier, the Askani brought his philosophy of peace into their fallen world and developed a form of meditation that involved floating upside down.

The Askani believed in the prophesied “Askani’son” or “Dayspring,” a warrior destined to defeat Apocalypse, and in the Twelve, a group of modern mutants who were key to the ancient mutant’s rise. Fueled by the dreams of the past, the Askani believed in accepting fate and protecting the timeline, even from time-travelers who wanted to change history for the better.
