Tom Holland and Zendaya

Tom Holland may have suckered Sony a few years ago.

Also, Spider-Man: Brand New Day tickets are going on sale soon.

So, this is a Spider-intensive batch of MarvelBlog News.

Spidey Outsmarts the Villains

In every Spider-Man movie, the villains seemingly get the upper hand.

Sure, they monologue their way into blowing a winning hand, but they do get ahead.

Ultimately, Spider-Man outsmarts and thwarts him thanks to his pluck and grit.

The formula works because it’s so entertaining, but nobody believes it’s realistic.

Well, maybe we should, as it seems Tom Holland shares similar characteristics.

Okay, I may be giving him credit when it’s really Zendaya giving him advice.

Still, the story we’re about to discuss amuses me. Holland just beat the system.

I’m about to post a quote that I’m sure you’ve heard a time or two.

In 2021, Holland infamously said: “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.”

The actor was 25 at the time, hinting that his days as Peter Parker were coming to an end.

Marvel fans expressed fear and outrage at the thought of losing their beloved Spidey.

From their perspective, Holland had grown into the role since his original casting.

Three weeks after his 19th birthday, the actor signed a six-picture contract for the MCU.

You may not have realized it, but Holland has been doing this for more than a decade now.

Also, the actor turned 30 last week. Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out next month.

So, yeah. He’s totally still playing Spider-Man when he’s 30. Has he done something wrong?

Apparently not! In fact, if the actor is telling the truth, he pulled a fast one here.

Tom Holland: Master Negotiator

While speaking to GQ, Holland revealed the master plan he’d created.

Okay, Zendaya probably created it, but it worked. That’s all that matters.

When Holland said that quote in 2021, he was throwing a purpose pitch.

At the time, Spider-Man: No Way Home was only a few weeks from release.

You can count the number of MCU films Holland had done by then. Here’s the list:

  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Spider-Man: Far from Home
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

Yeah, that’s five, which makes No Way Home his sixth film.

Long story short, his MCU contract was expiring, and he/Zendaya knew it.

So, Holland did something exceptionally smart. He said that quote to a reporter.

The actor did this knowing full well what would happen next. It would go viral.

At the time, the actor was 25 years old, which strongly hinted that he was nearly done.

After all, the lead time on a Hollywood movie production of this scale is at least two years.

At most, Holland could have done two more Spider-Man movies before turning 30.

Sony and Marvel understandably panicked at the quote for obvious reasons.

We’re already on the third Spider-Man actor this century. It’s gotten ridiculous.

People never accepted Andrew Garfield at the time since his arrival came too soon after Tobey Maguire’s conclusion.

It speaks volumes about Holland’s likability that he managed to gain new fans.

The character has always been top-five at Marvel in popularity.

Holland somehow elevated Spider-Man to an even higher echelon.

The thought of his leaving after just six years freaked out everyone.

From Sony’s perspective, the golden goose had developed agency and resigned.

But the whole thing was a con. Holland never had any intention of leaving.

Outsmarted by Tom Holland

Tom Holland

As an MCU performer, Holland is famous for two things: his youth and his transparency.

In fact, his desire to please others has led to his revealing too much on several occasions.

For this reason, I fully understand why Sony and Marvel took him seriously.

They quickly came up with a plan to persuade Holland to continue in the role.

And why wouldn’t they? No Way Home earned $1.9 billion during a pandemic!

So, Sony renegotiated a new contract with Holland, thereby playing right into his hand.

Sony executives didn’t realize it, but they were effectively negotiating against themselves.

Holland had no intention of leaving the role that had made him a global superstar.

He simply wanted more power in the negotiations, and guess what happened!

Here’s a Deadline article from late 2024 about Holland’s new Sony production deal.

Now, Sony isn’t just paying him for his acting. He gets to pitch and earn from other films.

Whether this idea was Holland’s or Zendaya’s, it worked perfectly.

Sony panicked and gave Tom Holland everything he could have possibly wanted.

Once again, Spider-Man bested the villain and emerged victorious.

Unless you care about video games, it’s been a slow couple of news weeks.

We did get the full release of Spider-Noir, which has done quite well overall.

Nielsen won’t release streaming ratings for a while, and Amazon rarely says anything.

What we do know is that the series is 91 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

On Metacritic, Nic Cage’s Spider-Man show has earned a 72, which is pretty good.

So, fans seem happy enough, even if the consensus is that he’s overacting all the time.

Circling back to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland released this:

There’s someone who has figured out how to play ball in Hollywood. Or Zendaya has.

Anyway, tickets go on sale later this week for the July 31st release.

You’ll want to buy early, as this may be the number one movie of 2026.

To enhance those odds, Sony will probably release another trailer this week, too.

That way may go ahead and reveal the truth about Sadie Sink’s character.

If Sony does that, tickets WILL sell out throughout opening weekend.
