We’ve got a fun week for MarvelBlog News.

The Russos Speak

The Russo Brothers have done some media interviews this week.

During one of them, the directors recounted some of the changes they’ve made.

Think of this conversation as the duo confirming some long-suspected ideas.

Then, we have a few that are rather shocking revelations, at least to those who know Marvel history.

For example, Captain America: Civil War wasn’t the name the Russos preferred.

They angled for the decidedly more controversial Avengers: Civil War.

You can understand why Marvel and Disney hesitated on that one.

Paul Bettany is also a hero in terms of suffering for his art. Here’s an anecdote:

“I just remember we had (Paul) Bettany hanging from wires. He was in that suit in this heat.”

Apparently, the heatwave on the set that day reached 135 degrees on the ground.

At one point, a tear in Bettany’s costume led to this rather gross memory:

“And there was so much sweat that it just started streaming like a fountain.

Weird stories from the set are a constant in Hollywood.

The real surprise involved the Russos’ interpretation of Peter Parker.

According to them, “So in our minds, no, Peter Parker wasn’t responsible for Uncle Ben’s death. That would have been a different interpretation.”

You read that right. The Russos reset Marvel history to lighten Parker’s load.

As Marvel superfans, they felt like Spider-Man placed that onus on himself.

Even though he hadn’t directly caused Ben’s death, he still felt guilty.

That’s in stark contrast to the Sam Raimi version, where Parker’s choices led to Ben’s death.

I’d encourage you to read the article, as it’s excellent prep for Avengers: Doomsday.

To a larger point, I’d argue that many of Marvel’s 2020s struggles are easily defined.

The studio didn’t want to pay people like the Russos and then suffered from that vacuum.

Now that the Russos are back, I feel much better about the state of Marvel.

Daredevil Finishes Strong

I’m woefully behind on Marvel recaps, and I sincerely apologize for that.

The articles themselves are easy to write, but the image compilation is…a lot.

Still, like a lot of you, I’ve been mesmerized by Daredevil: Born Again.

The second season has featured some stunning twists, and the show finished strong.

Without diving into massive spoilers, let’s just confirm a couple of previous rumors.

Yes, Jessica Jones did return. No, she wasn’t the only member of The Defenders.

If you don’t know which one, let’s just say it’s not Daredevil and leave it at that.

For Jones, the season ended just the way I’d hoped. It sets up a potential spinoff.

Importantly, that show wouldn’t necessarily be called Jessica Jones.

If anything, its name would be familiar to fans of her comic book origins.

The other confirmation is that the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer did include a spoiler.

If you don’t know what that means, I’ll leave it there. If you do…yup.

Punishe

The resolution to this season didn’t go the way anybody expected, which is a good thing.

Now, Disney+ will continue the story on Tuesday with The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Amusingly, this will be the second straight Tuesday that Disney+ dedicates to Jon Bernthal.

This past week, the streamer caught everyone off-guard with a surprise release.

The Punisher and The Thing co-wrote a standalone prequel episode of The Bear called Gary.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach dropped the news on his Instagram account.

Disney had made no mention of this project beforehand.

So, Bernthal stars in Disney+ one-shots on May 5th and May 12th.

There’s nothing more to the story than that, but I thought it was fun.

Circling back to Daredevil, Charlie Cox has performed a few postgame interviews.

During one with The Wrap (warning: spoilers!), he acknowledged the truth.

When he filmed the most shocking scene in the finale, he didn’t know about the show’s renewal.

So, he played that scene like it was the end of the line for the character.

Once you’ve watched the episode, you’ll appreciate how clever the ending is.

Even though the producers didn’t know about the renewal, they gave themselves an out.

Now, we can explore much more of the Daredevil world in a more expansive season three.

Alternatively, Jessica Jones can do a spinoff show that reunites other Defenders.

Marvel has given itself plenty of options here, and I’m grateful for that.

On the Avengers Infinity Vision front, nothing appears likely to change.

IMAX sneered at the idea, (correctly) dismissing it as shameless aggrandizing.

Since Marvel won’t have IMAX for Avengers: Doomsday, it’s hyping something else.

Photo: Marvel

The studio is doing this to charge more for tickets, but they won’t be of IMAX quality.

However, recent reports suggest that Avengers: Secret Wars will be in IMAX.

That declaration may be IMAX’s way of dropping the fight before it grows acrimonious.

The reality is that Marvel and IMAX need each other.
