Dharmendra’s First Crush Was Suraiya
While Dharmendra later went on to work with some of the most beautiful heroines in the Bollywood film industry, there was one person who stole his heart, “Mallika-e-Husn” and the “Mallika-e-Adakari” of her time, the one and only Suraiya.
Suraiya’s grace, her voice, and her spirit and depth of acting had the complete nation under her spell, and given young Dharmendra’s tendency to easy crushes, he was no exception. Dharmendra became so taken by Suraiya that he would go to the theatres to see one movie of hers, Dillagi (1949), nearly forty times! That is how deep he was enchanted.
