Marvel just pulled another film from its release schedule. What is going on?

We’ll piece together everything we know in MarvelBlog News.

What Just Happened?

Long story short, it happened again. Marvel removed an unannounced title from its release schedule.

Ordinarily, I’d tell you not to worry about the whole thing, as these are typically films many years from release.

However, this particular title was scheduled for 2027, and it’ll be 2026 next quarter.

So, we’re pretty late in the game to pull a movie that was 20 months from its release date.

In Disney’s defense, it had something really good to take that spot.

We’re getting The Simpsons Movie 2 in July 2027 rather than another Marvel movie.

Still, neither Disney nor Marvel went ahead and announced a replacement date for the comic book movie.

That’s a warning sign that it’s no longer in the plans in the short term, whatever that film was.

And yes, I know what the rumors suggest this title would have been, but that no longer matters.

Instead, the focus here should be on Disney’s new Marvel strategy for the next two years.

Less Is More (Again)

The modified plan flies in the face of what Disney has attempted in 2025. Now, less is more.

As the matter currently stands, Marvel will only release one movie in 2026 and one movie in 2027.

That is…unusual. It’s also not financially profitable as a rule, although I’ll add an important caveat here.

Both those releases will be Avengers movies. So, we can all read the writing on the wall here.

Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps collectively underachieved.

As I type this, those three films have earned $1.32 billion. Black Panther alone earned $1.35 billion.

Now, times were different then, as the pandemic escalated the ascension of streaming and decline of the theatrical experience.

Still, Disney spent a reported $560 million – and possibly more – to earn barely twice that total.

Films really need to make 2.5x their gross to be profitable, although domestic box office matters more.

I’ll post a 2025 box office recap in late December or early January, but let’s just say it’s not great.

At this point, the only film I’m sure made Marvel money was Fantastic Four, the most expensive one.

Obviously, the profits here are less than ideal, which is a problem for Disney and Marvel.

Now, the two parties have put their heads together and decided that they need to focus on Avengers: Doomsday.

Reports have already indicated that the teaser for this project will debut with Avatar: Fire and Ash.

That’s Disney’s biggest gun right now, which shows how much importance the company is placing on Avengers marketing.

There’s more happening than just that, though. That “less is more” strategy isn’t new.

We’re watching it unfold right now on Disney+.

Cheaper Is Better (to Disney)

We should call the “less is more” strategy what it is: cheaper for Disney and Marvel.

The mantra that exists in business is that “you gotta spend money to make money.”

Disney doesn’t want to spend money on Marvel right now because it’s not making any.

We enjoyed a constant onslaught of Marvel content during the 2010s because consumers paid to support it.

Now that customers are voting with their wallets that they’re rather tired of Marvel, Disney’s closing its wallet.

We just watched this happen on Disney+, which feels odd to say so soon after Marvel’s Zombies.

Still, Disney made big promises about populating Disney+ with Marvel content.

Once Disney+ proved unprofitable, leadership panicked and reduced the output of original programs.

For a time, one Marvel series would end and then another would begin the following week.

With the benefit of hindsight, that was the good ole days on Disney+. Now, we have these gaps.

In calendar 2025, Disney has released eight episodes of Daredevil, six episodes of Ironheart, and animated content.

The company has also explicitly stated it plans to release one or possibly two original live-action programs per year.

From a business perspective, the idea is that Disney can market each title more effectively.

Also, with less content, it should be better since Marvel will provide more detailed oversight.

The problem with that philosophy is that Ironheart proved to be nothing special. At least that’s the consensus opinion.

Daredevil: Born Again, for all its excellence and focused marketing, didn’t exactly draw a crowd.

Presumably, Avengers: Doomsday will work differently, but this is a risky decision by Disney.

I’ll use one more maxim here. Disney’s putting all its eggs in just one basket.

Marvel Miscellany

Speaking of Marvel’s Zombies, Disney hasn’t renewed the series just yet.

However, the company did trumpet the show’s early performance on streaming as exceptional.

I’ve watched the series, and I think mine is the majority opinion. It’s great…until the final few minutes. IFYKYK.

On the Sony side of things, rumors are rampant that Charlie Cox may appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Obviously, he already made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but now he may be Daredevil, not Matt Murdoch.

There are a lot of rumors like this flying around, partially because Avengers: Doomsday has wrapped.

Meanwhile, Brand New Day is well into production now, which is when casting surprises leak.

There’s another factor at play here, though. A couple of high-profile conventions have occurred recently.

Actors always get grilled on their upcoming roles and story arcs. So, here we are.

The Charlie Cox thing may be a total lie, but it makes sense with The Punisher in the film.

Also, Murdoch has already been established in this universe. He just…wouldn’t remember Spider-Man.
