After the financially disappointing theatrical runs of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios returned to theaters on July 25, with the highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Introducing Marvel’s first family into the MCU, First Steps delivered the kind of Fantastic Four adventure that fans have long hoped to see on the big screen.
“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
The Film Had a Strong Debut Weekend
Audiences flocked to theaters over The Fantastic Four’s first weekend, with the film eventually delivering a $118 million domestic debut. Overseas, First Steps grossed another $100 million, for a global cume of $218 million.

In addition to the strong box office numbers, The Fantastic Four: First Steps also delivered strong reviews from critics and fans alike. It looked like the film would enjoy the kind of extended box office run that has largely eluded Marvel in recent years.
Unfortunately, last weekend proved that the film may have been more frontloaded than we initially believed.
The Film’s Second-Weekend Results
In its second weekend in theaters, The Fantastic Four: First Steps added another $40 million to its domestic haul. Week-over-week, the film suffered a 66% drop, which was in line with Captain America: Brave New World (68%) and steeper than Thunderbolts* (-56%).

As things stand, The Fantastic Four has grossed just under $200 million in domestic theaters. That number not only makes First Steps one of the biggest films of 2025, but also the highest-grossing Fantastic Four movie ever.

So, while First Steps is not the historic blockbuster that many had hoped for, Marvel has reason to remain optimistic.
