Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! Fourth of July is coming up, which for our American readers means a chance to eat too many hamburgers, get a sunburn, and then watch some fireworks. Hopefully by the time that happens this massive heat wave dissipates. If you do end up stuck inside where it’s cooler, here are some comics for you (aren’t I just a master of segues?)
Upcoming Comics
Gotham City Sirens: Unfit For Orbit #1

There’s a hot new outer space-themed nightclub in Gotham City, and who better to rob it than Catwoman, Ivy, and Harley? But there’s more to this intergalactic discotheque than meets the eye(s), as the Sirens discover when they stumble headfirst into a plot to destroy the entire planet led by the club’s owner—the alien despot Despero! I hope you have good insurance, Gotham City, because you’re about to get wrecked. Special appearances by deadly DJs, hunky alien hotties, dancers dressed as aliens, mutant failures, one wild UFO, and lots and lots of fire!
- Written By: Leah Williams
- Art By: Haining
Thoughts: Last time they brought back the Sirens I got kind of excited but then very disappointed. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, you can’t get fooled again.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 #2

In the aftermath of the shocking ending of the last issue, Task Force X must re-evaluate their mission in Hollow Earth as they explore an unknown world. Meanwhile the Justice League comes face-to-face again with Kong—but it’s not the reunion they are expecting!
- Written By: Brian Buccellato
- Art By: Christian Duce
Thoughts: “But what if we made everything even bigger?”
Batman News Critic: Chip
Batman ’89: Echoes #6

There’s no cure for terror! Gotham is in the grip of a citywide panic attack, and only Batman can stop the Scarecrow’s viral fear formula from falling into enemy hands. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn makes her ACN television debut…by taking station management hostage! New friends, new foes, and old flames collide as Bruce Wayne reclaims his cape and cowl—with a vengeance!—in the epic finale of Batman ‘89: Echoes.
- Written By: Sam Hamm
- Art By: Joe Quinones
Thoughts: Can you believe this is finally, actually coming out? The last issue was in December. There aren’t many series that have been delayed as often as this one.
Batman News Critic: Akash
Batgirl #9

Batgirl is on the run—but not for long. As three deadly warriors from the League of Shadows, the Blood of Wu, and the Unburied each trail her, Cassandra Cain arrives at a ranch seeking answers from her mother’s past…but time is running out. As shocking family ties unravel, the first of the three swords arrives, hell-bent on ending Batgirl’s story for good.
- Written By: Tate Brombal
- Art By: Takeshi Miyazawa
Thoughts: I think a big part of the reason they exist is because of the Nolan films, but the League of Shadows always felt like “we have the League of Assassins at home”.
Batman News Critic: Chris
Teen Titans Go! #5

When Starfire flubs the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner,” she responds to everyone’s mockery by learning how to be the most American she can be. Her mission: eat hot dogs at a baseball game, go to a monster truck rally, and visit a state fair. The Titans are all in, which is great until things turn out like they usually do with this team. Will the fairgrounds ever recover?
- Written By: Amanda Deibert
- Art By: Dario Brizuela
Thoughts: What, no apple pie?
Batman News Critic: Chip
Birds of Prey #23

Bruised and battered, with one teammate lost to the enemy and another now missing, the Birds split up and disappear into the darkness of Gotham at Black Canary’s command. The Shadow Army has struck at the very heart of the Birds of Prey and now has all the pieces to create its game-changing weapon.
- Written By: Kelly Thompson
- Art By: Sami Basri
Thoughts: When the enemy is picking you off one by one, the best move is often to split up.
Batman News Critic: Jeremy
Beyond the Bat
Welcome to Beyond the Bat, where we take a quick look at the rest of DC’s comics coming out this week.
Graphic Novel Watch
Sometimes you need more than floppies. Sometimes you want something that can sit nicely on your shelf that proudly displays your favorite stories. That’s when you turn to graphic novels. Let’s see what bat collections are coming out this week:
Ratings
Most Excited: Batman ’89: Echoes #6– I’m just excited that it’s finally out (not that they couldn’t delay it again at the last minute).
Least Excited: Gotham City Sirens: Unfit For Orbit #1– The last series killed a lot of hope I had for the return of a Sirens series like what existed under Dini.
Wild Card: Batgirl #9– This series might end up being a stealth Shiva book.
Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
