In a new profile on Superman director James Gunn, he has confirmed that heroes and metahumans have existed in the DCU for 300 years.
Rolling Stone has published a lengthy feature on James Gunn about his overall career and the choices he has made along the way. In addition to a look back on his life, Gunn shared some tidbits about various DCU projects as well as some new knowledge about the universe.
One of the first things to leap out is that he has confirmed that heroes and metahumans are nothing new in the DCU. Discussing what made him finally feel as though he could write a Superman film was getting over the oddness of a world where there can be a super-powered dog that wears a cape. He went on to add, “Not to mention that he exists in a world where superheroes, or some form of metahumans, have existed for 300 years.”
How much of that history we will ever see remains to be seen.
There are numerous DCU tidbits sprinkled throughout the article including that it looks as though Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be shortened to Supergirl.
He acknowledged there had been discussions about Robert Pattinson’s Batman being in the DCU, that does appear to be off the table, but he would never fully close the door to the possibility.
As to what Gunn’s next project in the DCU will be, he does say it will be a movie and that he is a couple treatments deep on the script now. He did confirm, however, that it is not the Brave and the Bold script, but he is consulting on that one.
And speaking of Batman, he also went on to confirm that Batman and Wonder Woman coming into this universe are high priorities, but he fully acknowledges that Batman will be a harder nut to crack just due to how many TV and cinematic versions of him have already existed.
The entire piece is worth chaking out just from insights into how Gunn is handling his career at this time.
Superman will hit theaters in wide release on July 11, 2025.
